BIG BUDGET MOVIES v/s SMALL BUDGET MOVIES

I thought diversion is essential from all the terrorist mania pervading the net. So let me comment on the recent trend of small budget movies hitting the jackpot in Bollywood. In fact I am a big fan of these movies, made with actors (not stars) with a simple storyline and real to life characters. Khosla ka Ghosla was one of the fore runners in this breed of cinema. And then you had the classic Bheja Fry, Ek Chalis ki last local, Mixed Doubles, Johnny Gaddar, Manorama-six feet under, etc. We have some more movies that have relased now like Das Vidanya, Dil Kabbadi, and Sorry Bhai. I am yet to see the recent releases. On the other hand extravagant movies with superstars like Drona, Tashan, Heroes, all have fallen by the wayside.
That brings us to the point that it doesnt require superstars who charge in crores or lavish sets and foreign locales to strike a chord with the audience. A simple story, cleverly told with some decent acting can also be a roaring success. This type of story telling has been prevalent in Malayalam movies for quite some time, with the actor-writer Srinivasan being the pioneer. His recent movie Kadhaparayumbol was a super hit and is being remade in other languages (Billo Barber in Hindi starring Shahrukh, Kuselan in Tamil starring Rajnikanth)
Now the conterpoint. It may be also be that a film is declared a hit if it grosses more than it has spent and made a sizeable profit to its producers. And since the big budget movies cost a bomb in making, recovering all that money will need the movie to have an extraordinary story and repeat viewing by the audience, whereas the small budget movie will make a profit viz-a-viz its cost of production even with a simple story. So can they really be called HITS! Because even the C grade movies released in small towns make huge profits. Can they also be called HIT movies?
