Vasco da Gama Square, Fort Kochi

I have had friends asking me about the main attractions in Fort Kochi. The essence of Fort Kochi is mainly in and around the Vasco da Game square. So I am uploading some pics of the tourist district mostly centred around the Vasco da Gama Square in Fort Kochi.
The St.Francis Church is located at a stone throw distance from this square. This church is famous for preserving the remains of Vasco da Gama, the first European explorer to reach the shores of India via Kochi. The mortal remains were later taken to Portugal. The protestant church was built by the Portuguese in 1510 AD and is the oldest church built by Europeans in India. The church is open to visitors till 5 pm only.

The long walk along the shore starts from this square right upto the Fort Kochi Beach and is lined by stall selling curios, fish etc. You can also see the Chinese nets. The fishermen walk on the narrow bamboo to the net to collect their catch. The Beach is nothing to write home about, so not including any pics.

A very popular eating place among the tourists in this square is the Salt n Pepper restaurant, which is run on the pavement. The restaurant sells beer as lemon ice tea. Selling of liquor is prohibited without a licence and this restaurant is right next to the police station, but then in India, money talks.

Home Stays are quite popular with the foreign tourists. And there are a multitude of these, around the square. Every second house has been converted to a home stay. The Adams inn is located further up this street and is one of the favourite stops. The only other pavement restaurant in this square, Chariot is also located on this street corner. So if there are no seats availabe at Salt n Pepper, amble across to this joint. Both these places are packed till late in the evenings.

These streets are quiet with an old world charm and clean compared to the rest of the city. The most important factor is that this place is extremely tourist friendly, as most their business comes from the tourists.

I will try and compile a list of the homestays available in this area soon.
